Tips for Leaving your Children with a Babysitter

Leaving your child with a babysitter for the first time is a scary experience for any parent. For lot of parents, it is scary every time you have to do it, especially if you are a stay at home mom. However, every parent needs a break every once in a while, and you cannot always rely on your family members to be there when you need that break.
No matter how nervous you are, there are some steps you can take to ease your mind and be comfortable with the babysitter that you choose and leaving your child or children with that person. Here are some tips to help you leave your children with a babysitter confidently.

Use your home security alarm system
Having a good home security system is crucial for any family. If your children are older, make sure they know how to use the system. Otherwise, teach your babysitter how to use the system in the case of an emergency. Check with your local security companies for new updates to your system that can include cameras that can be viewed from your smart phone, so you can check in whenever you need some reassurance.

Prep you home
Make sure your home is not only safe for your children, but also safe for the babysitter before you leave. Pick up around your home and try to prevent any possible accidents. You can also eliminate any temptation for your kids and the babysitter at this time.
If you don’t want them to have junk food after you leave, store those items away where they cannot get to them. If you don’t want them to watch TV after 7 p.m., put a timer on the TV so that no one can access any channels after that time. These types of measures will help you feel better knowing that temptation is not available to distract your kids or the babysitter.

Do a background check
Your new babysitter will be your employee, so just as any company would do a background check before hiring a new employee, so should you. Get a resume with references from every possible candidate. Check with the families who have had your babysitter before and get their honest opinion about him or her. Check out your babysitter’s social media sites and see what his or her personality is like and how he or she conducts himself or herself during free time.

Do a face-to-face interview beforehand
Doing an interview is important for you know really get to know your babysitter beforehand. This is a good time to ask the questions you need to and become more familiar with the person. It is also a good idea to let the potential candidate meet your kids. This way you can see how the babysitter interacts with your children and how your children act around him or her. Get your kids’ opinions of the babysitter after he or she leaves, they will be honest with you. Trust your gut feeling and you will be able to relax knowing your children are safe.
