Homemade Nipple Butter

Being 2 weeks out from having a baby and breastfeeding the whole time has taken a bit of a toll on my poor nipples. We are dealing with a few cracks and overall slight pain due to his strong suck. So I've been using the heck out of nipple creams/butters. A tube of lanolin is about $8 and I bought a 1oz tub of Motherlove Nipple Cream, but that was $10. It adds up fast.

I have no idea how long I'll need nipple cream, but I figured it was worth it to figure out how to make my own and do it myself. So here is an EASY recipe!
(Links are exact items used)

2 parts Coconut Oil
2 parts Shea Butter
1 part Beeswax

I used everything above except for about 2 small chunks of the Beeswax.

I started by shredding the beeswax, but it was taking forever, so I just cut it up.

I used 1 bar of Beeswax (minus the 2 chunks) and then roughly 2oz of coconut and 2oz of shea. Give or take. Not an exact science.

DIRECTIONS
1. Create a double boiler on the stove and get it boiling.
2. Put in coconut oil and melt
3. Add in shea and melt
4. Add in beeswax and fully melt (this one takes the longest)
5. Take off heat and let cool a little
6. Pour into container of choice and let cool overnight

Then just cap it and use it! It's really soft!!

The above amounts got me 4oz of cream. I used an old baby food jar.
If you want more, up the amounts.

This would make a great new mommy gift :)

  1. Thank you for making and sharing your recipe for Homemade Nipple Butter. Upon reading the ingredients it's a wonder that anyone would want to buy it from a store. All of these ingredients are natural with no chemicals and if you've made other homemade creams or lotions, you would already have these ingredients on hand.

  2. I love this. I am less than 3 weeks away from having my baby girl and I am already trying to prepare myself for our breastfeeding journey together. I will definitely be making this as I know how sore I can get from breastfeeding. Thank you!

  6. Thank you for providing this recipe!!! I'm due with my first in July and decided on Motherlove nipple cream over Earth Mama Angel Baby based on the reviews I read, though it seems like both could work very, very well. There were enough people who like Motherlove over the other that it seemed worth going for it. What's your opinion on how this recipe compares to either of the other two brands?

  7. Erica, I have the Motherlove and really like it, it goes on so soft and smooth and is easy to get out of the container. Since it's cold and winter, this one is a bit hard because of the coconut oil, but healing wise I prefer this homemade one. Coconut oil is a great antimicrobial so it's wonderful for keeping thrush and infection at bay!

  8. Thanks for this! I had really bad cracking the first time around and lanolin didn't help much at the beginning. I may make some of this and give it a try with this baby.

  18. I am so very thankful I stumbled across this post! My daughter is expecting her third child any day now and she has had terribly sore and cracked nipples while breastfeeding the other two. And you are right, you can spend a small fortune on the products to give relief - or you can make your own. I am definitely going to make this in the next few days for her to have on hand. Thanks for the recipe!

  22. i like the basis of this recipe! i might try adding vitamin E for its healing properties. Also i wonder about putting a tiny bit of yarrow extract in it since it is such a powerful healing plant. will probably have to check on safety for baby on that one but for sure some vitamin e. thanks for sharing.
